Mahuaa News deploys Dalet News Suite
Posted: May 2009

Dalet NewSuiteThe Dalet News Suite is providing end-to-end MAM (media-asset management) solution for Mahuaa News, the recently-launched all-news TV channel in India.

Working with Ideal Broadcasting India Pvt Ltd, Dalet considered the Mahuaa deployment as the company’s first attempt at applying its end-to-end solution for a round-the-clock news station on the sub-continent.

The new channel is part of Mahuaa Media Private Limited’s (MMPL) plan to offer several highly targeted, thematic TV channels in the Bhojpuri language, which is one of the country’s most popular regional languages. MMPL is the associated company of Century Communications Group.

“The all news-operation is non-stop, very intense and fast-paced, so we needed a smooth, responsive and straight-forward workflow,” said Atul Jain, technical manager, Mahuaa News.

The Dalet News Suite provides journalists with a very natural environment where they perform all their key tasks with tools directly at hand, he added.

“From an operations’ point of view, the Dalet integrations with other critical systems — whether Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP) for craft editing or character-generating and playout systems — are transparent,” Jain said, stressing the importance of this in allowing the news staff to focus and work on news content while being confident of proper execution.

MMPL’s news production uses 40 Dalet-equipped workstations. The desktop tools are described by Dalet as job-relevant and configured to meet specific tasks, including video ingest, browsing and metadata logging, news-copy preparation (including wires and scripting), preparation of video packages (rough cuts and edit lists) and management of the rundown for playout.

The Dalet Xtend plug-in for the FCP is an example of how the Dalet News Suite helps generate fluid workflows. Editors make rough-cut edits using Dalet Media Cutter while more comprehensive editing and effects are made on FCP.

The Dalet Xtend module allows for direct import between the Dalet browser and FCP bins.

Viewing the workflow in its entirety, the Dalet News Suite monitors the status of all items and updates the rundown automatically upon completion of the packages. The suite also works with the Omneon Media Deck in managing video ingest and playout.
