| MediaCorp picks XPression as graphics system for YOG 2010 |
| Posted: November 2010 | ||||||
For the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2010), held from August 14-26 in Singapore,
MediaCorp, the republic’s dominant terrestrial broadcaster, built a studio in the Games’ International Broadcast Centre, located at the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, from where many of the events were broadcast live.MediaCorp aired daily feeds of the various Games on its HD Channel 5 from 3pm to 12am. Arguably the biggest sporting event ever to be held in the republic, MediaCorp recognised the need to ensure that all YOG-related broadcasts went without a hitch. To form and complete the broadcast chain, MediaCorp sought a graphics system that would meet its graphics requirements for the YOG 2010 broadcasts. Essentially, sports graphics are all about getting correct up-to-the-second information displayed in a visually appealing format to enrich the viewing experience. So prior to the commencement of YOG 2010, MediaCorp tested various graphics systems and eventually decided on Ross Video’s XPression. It was because, said Rajesh Sharma, principal engineer, Project and Development Enterprises with MediaCorp Technologies, the XPression was “easy-to-use, flexible, [while] allowing the creation of visually appealing graphics in real-time capabilities”. The XPression is a high-quality 2D and 3D character generator and broadcast production graphics platform for the design and playout of sophisticated motion graphics. Its comprehensive sports-oriented feature set provides easy creation of compelling graphic looks, unparalleled animation capabilities and tight live data integration. Moreover, the XPression’s Application Programming Interface (API) makes it possible to create specific, dedicated user interfaces tailored to sports applications. Another feature of the XPression particularly pertinent to the YOG broadcast was XPression’s DataLinq. “XPression’s DataLinq feature made template data integration a breeze. We worked with template-based graphics workflows and integrated live updates of the information into the templates by linking the graphics templates to various database sources with XPression. We were able to update graphics live as the data started coming in, and the graphics (character generation, animations and live scores) produced on-air was of very high quality,” explained Rajesh. Added Dae Choe, director of Sales, Asia Pacific for Ross Video: “XPression’s DataLinq option provides an interface to a wide range of external data sources. Coupled with easy-to-use template-creation tools and extremely fast render engine to allow for last-minute modifications, this makes XPression an ideal graphics system for any sports application.” As the curtains drew on a successful YOG 2010, Rajesh was able to reflect on the role the XPression played in MediaCorp’s broadcast of the inaugural Games. “We were running a dead timeline for the YOG and we had very little time to prepare for the YOG graphics. Because the XPression was so easy to use, our graphic artist was able to master the system very quickly. In turn, we were able to create and play back the graphics on air without problems. The XPression is definitely among the top-tier products of live graphics systems currently available in the market.”
