Aiming to represent a breakthrough for independent producers and filmmakers in terms of features, performance and price,
Sony is set to unveil its first professional handheld digital production camera with a Super 35mm imager, the PMW-F3.The latest product of Sony’s flagship CineAlta series, the PMW-F3, is based on Sony’s XDCAM EX workflow and uses Sony’s SxS ExpressCard-based recording media format. Its Super 35mm CMOS imager delivers shallow depth of field, with high sensitivity and low noise levels, as well as wide dynamic range. The PMW-F3 also offers shooters a wide range of image-creation options through the use of a HD-SDI dual-link output for external recording. Chris Grey, head of Broadcast & Content Creation Solutions, Business & Professional Products Asia Pacific (BPPA) at Sony Electronics Asia Pacific, said: “With the new F3, we are putting Sony’s rich expertise in the hands of all producers, a powerful high-performance digital imaging tool with utmost flexibility and creative control in a tiny form factor for ease of maneuvering even around challenging locations. It is designed for a range of digital production applications — from commercial to documentary, TV and feature-film production.” The PMW-F3 camcorder will be available in the Asia-Pacific region from next month. Meanwhile, Sony has developed a new type of E-mount interchangeable lens camcorder for professional use that is equipped with a Super 35mm large-format CMOS sensor. According to Sony, this latest addition to Sony’s professional NXCAM camcorder line will provide an affordable yet highly capable professional solution for many applications, including independent film, music video and corporate productions seeking the “cinematic look”. The recording format for the new HD camcorder will be AVCHD, a widely supported format by many non-linear editing software vendors and the same format as the HXR-NX5 NXCAM camcorder, Sony’s first professional AVCHD memory camcorder. The new NXCAM HD camcorder will be available in mid-2011.
