“Dark, dangerous and wet” is how cinematographer Stephen Bean described the working conditions during his most recent film project
, a documentary titled The Undo Cave Expedition 2011.Together with an international team of archeology students and scientists from University College Cork (UCC), Bean travelled to Georgia in the Caucasus region of Eurasia to document the work of archeologists in their search for Paleolithic-era DNA. Having already shot numerous archeology films under extreme conditions, making research documentaries is right up Bean’s alley. However, the documentary in the Undo Cave in South Caucasus still proved to be a great challenge for the experienced cinematographer, as Bean explained: “To make filming in the complete darkness of the cave passages possible at all, we had to rely on dependable lighting equipment. That’s why the MicroPro camera light by Litepanels was the perfect companion for our project.” Bean and his team utilised three MicroPro LED camera lights from Litepanels during filming in the Undo Cave. According to Bean, who often had to worm his way through the narrow passageways of the cave on his knees or in crouched positions, the MicroPro lights can be easily mounted on the camera, is compact and lightweight and can easily navigate the obstacles associated with working in the cramped and damp environment. The MicroPro lights were also deployed when filming interviews with the archaeologists in front of the cave. Bean elaborated: “The LED light provided the right light to no matter what the requirements were: in the cave as a key light and during the interviews as a fill light, which I adjusted with colour gels.” “The possibility of powering the lights with a battery belt was especially practical for us … I was able to follow the archaeologists deep into the cave and didn’t have to worry about suddenly standing in the dark with the camera,” said Bean. “The MicroPro won me over and made demanding work easier for me.”
