June 2 transmission of the first HD content on Channel 4. The brand-new Argosy-built facility enabled Lime Pictures to air Hollyoaks — the first British serial drama to be produced in HD and one of Channel 4’s best-known, popular dramas — using the latest HD technology, said Argosy. Argosy products form a -major part of the overhaul of Lime Pictures’ production and editing facilities. The infrastructure-backbone requirements for the new central apparatus room (CAR) and throughout the eight editing suites, seven dubbing suites and studio facilities at Lime Pictures included racks, plinths, mains-distribution units, video-patch panels, audio-jack fields and HD IMAGE cables (single and multi-mode infrastructure cables, along with SMPTE 311M camera cables) and connectors. To rebuild its production and editing facilities “from the ground up” allowed Lime Pictures “to be very specific about the HD products we wanted”, said its head of techno-logy, Andy Murray. “[As] the implementation of the new CAR was significant, we wanted ... the best products available. “We selected the Argosy products for a number of reasons — first and foremost was the substantial breadth and quality of the product offering. However, we also felt that Argosy understood our business drivers and workflow requirements.” Murray was also aware that the company, being “very conscious of 3Gbps technology was gathering momentum”, sought to future-proof its infrastructure as much as possible against these advancements. “These factors, alongside our ongoing positive experience of working with A-rgosy over many years [showed], 12 months on, that we made the right decision. Argosy’s ability to deliver products — in some cases at very short notice — proved to be a great asset and one we utilised on many occasions,” he added. Lime Pictures’ server-based approach to production was built around a CAR with a 102TB data direct video production SAN. The editing suites were based on Apple- -Final Cut Pro while each of the dubbing suites had Merging Technology’s Pyramix audio post-production DAWs, VCube HD-video playback systems, together with Merging’s Ramses control surfaces — all connected via Argosy HD IMAGE cable.
