Thales has launched its most powerful Ka-band traveling wave tube (TWT).

The TH 4092 is able to deliver 500W peak and 350W continuous wave (CW) intended for large earth-station uplinks for broadcast and Internet DTH (Direct-to-Home) applications.

Developed by Thales Microwave & Imaging Sub-systems R&D teams, both in France and Germany, TWT incorporates the performance and reliability of Thales’ electron tube technology.
The TH 4092 is said to be the first of a new generation of Ka-band TWTs dedicated to the high-power Satcom uplinks market. For this new development, the design margins have been increased with a top-down approach that will allow a high level of reliability. The company’s 30-year heritage in Ka-band is also based on more than 1,100 tubes already delivered.
All Thales’ TWTs in Ka-band have the benefit of technologies initially developed for space applications.

The conduction-cooled TH 4092 features a four-stage collector design leading to very high overall efficiency, typically 55% at saturation.Thales said the excellent performance of its electron tubes, recognised worldwide, is based on a long experience in the development and production of these highly specialised products, demanding expertise and extensive industrial facilities.

The company produces more than 2,000 TWTs every year for satellite downlink and uplink markets.
