| More than 1,200 satellites to be launched over next decade |
| Posted: November 2010 | ||||||
An estimated 1,220 satellites will be built for launch over the next decade, according to Euroconsult,
the leading international research and analyst firm specialising in the satellite sector.The average of 122 satellites to be launched per year is up significantly from the annual average of 77 satellites launched in the previous decade, a sign that government and commercial operators require more satellite capabilities. In Euroconsult’s recently released Satellites to be Built & Launched by 2019, World Market Survey, the company projected that revenues from manufacturing and launch of these 1,220 satellites will reach US$194 billion worldwide for the decade. The report concludes that governments across the world will continue to dominate the space market, accounting for two-thirds of the total number of spacecraft launched and the same amount of launch and manufacturing revenues. “Governments realise that satellite systems are a critical part of their country’s infrastructure and contribute to socio-economic development by providing communications and geo-information solutions to many government agencies,” said Rachel Villain, director of Space for Euroconsult and editor of the report. Meanwhile, Euroconsult expects commercial space to be dominated by 50 companies operating communications and broadcast satellites in geostationary orbit (GEO), with the two largest companies, Intelsat and SES, having a fleet of over 40 satellites each. Euroconsult forecasted that 214 commercial communications satellites will be launched into the GEO arc from 2010-19, with a market value of US$55 billion. The peak of the cycle will occur early in the decade, with 25 units to be launched per year, declining to fewer than 20 units per year at the end of the period.
