| Thomson Video Networks hits another milestone |
| Posted: October 2011 | ||||||
A milestone has been achieved by Thomson Video Networks — with the announcement that the total number of TV channels
using Thomson’s ViBE EM SD encoders worldwide have surpassed 6,000.Real-time encoders supporting both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (H.264), Thomson Video Networks’ ViBE EM1000 and ViBE EM2000 are powered by the custom-designed Thomson Mustang compression engine, delivering “benchmark” encoding efficiency for broadcasters transmitting signals over satellite, terrestrial, cable and IP networks. In the first half of this year, the ViBE EM1000 and ViBE EM2000 were widely used in Europe for the deployment of digi-tal terrestrial TV (DTT), particularly in Sweden, France, Spain and Russia, said Thomson. In Africa and the Middle East, direct-to-home (DTH) satellite operators, including Noorsat in Bahrain and Multichoice in South Africa, are operating the ViBE EM SD encoders; while in Asia, Thomson’s encoders deliver TV channels to millions of viewers for a roster of customers, including Independent TV in Bangladesh, TVB in Hong Kong, Fujian Southeast Cable in China, and Reliance in India. In addition, Thomson has unveiled the ViBE EM4000 multi-channel HD encoder, incorporating a “substantially more powerful evolution” of the Thomson Mustang compression engine. With the ViBE EM4000, users can add an extra channel to a transponder without reducing picture quality, or opt for improved quality with the same number of channels. Christophe Delahousse, president of Thomson Video Networks, said: “The ViBE EM4000 offers a notable improvement over all previous HD AVC encoding solutions. Users currently running six channels on a transponder will be able to add a seventh, for example.” Scheduled to ship in the coming months, the ViBE EM4000 multi-channel HD encoder can be deployed as a standalone encoder or as part of a headend infrastructure with multiplexers and a network management system.
