Maximising digital dividends with hybrid TV With the growing popularity of hybrid TV, analysts predict that there will be one billion Web-enabled TV sets in operation, and worldwide shipments of pay-TV hybrid set-top boxes (STBs) will grow to nearly 87 million units by 2015. “Hybrid TV enables providers to offer a flexible and complete multi-screen entertainment experience that is not tied to a rigid, fixed-line infrastructure,” says Sunil Frida, general manager of International Services at Sezmi Corporation. “This ability to deliver content seamlessly across multiple networks will appeal to a wide range of consumer interests, and will place Asia in a better position to leverage existing infrastructure and adapt to changing market needs.” With the opinion that regional developments in hybrid TV could shatter analyst predictions that IPTV revenues will increase more than 19% in the next seven years, Frida will also discuss how countries with strong broadband infrastructure can advance the convergence of TV entertainment services in wireless environments in his conference presentation titled, Global Opportunities in Hybrid TV. Other distinguished speakers who will share detailed insights on the topic of hybrid TV are Jean-Christophe Jubin from HTTV; Joss Armitage from IMPALA; and Shahrul Imran Sultan from Measat Broadcast Network Systems (Astro). The next frontier of 3D With many touting 3D as the next big revenue generator in the broadcast industry, the BroadcastAsia2011 International Conference will include a dedicated track focused on pertinent content issues that will determine the success of 3DTV in the homes. In a presentation titled, 3DTV — Hype or a Sustainable Business? Dr Randolph Nikutta of Deutsche Telekom will discuss how the consumer electronics industry is driving the new 3D viewing experience, and share a case study on how this interest can be translated into a successful business. Other speakers whom delegates can expect to hear from include NHK from Japan, ADB in Switzerland, Widescreen Revolutions from Singapore, Photon Beard in the UK, and Motorola Mobility Inc and 3ality from the US. Changing business models in the broadcast industry Current business challenges require business model innovation, coupled with technology platform innovation, to drive revenues across a growing range of end-point devices and outlets. Titled Today’s Digital Revenue Reality Check — How to Capitalise on Changing Consumer Behaviour, Rob van den Dam from IBM in the Netherlands will share his perspective on new digital devices that present opportunities for consumer engagement, and how these may trigger disruption in the media ecosystem. Delegates will also learn more about the findings of an IBM study that is focused on business and revenue model innovation to offset the value loss in traditional media with the growth of digital. Other international speakers who will share their insights into the changing business of broadcasting are US company Microsoft Corporation, Accedo Broadband from Hong Kong, Network18 from India, BT Media and Broadcast and Latens Systems from the UK.
