| Grass Valley systems power Indian broadcaster's workflow |
| Posted: July 2009 | ||||||
TV9, the 24-hour news channel serving the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, has upgraded its production facility to one that is file-based.
The station in Hyderabad which has been using Grass Valley Profile servers since its launch in 2004 is using Grass Valley K2 media servers to support its editing and playout functions.Owned by India’s Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC), TV9 has also relied on Grass Valley’s Aurora Edit workstations from the beginning, with 10 seats for journalists and editors, equipping them with comprehensive functionality including titling capabilities. Another two Aurora Edit seats are included in a dedicated room enabled with craft-editing facilities such as 3D DVE and colour correction. All the edit workstations share content through a common K2 media server with RAID storage, which also acts as the ingest store as news reports come in from journalists. Completed stories are passed to primary and backup K2 servers for playout. All media management and system configuration are controlled through workflows established by the Grass Valley App Center, with simple Windows-based software running on a PC on the same network. The main news studio includes a Grass Valley Kayak production switcher for a polished output. Other TV9 programmes are produced using the Grass Valley Indigo AV Mixer, which combines an audio-follow-video mixer with production switching. “We are an aggressive newsgathering organisation. Our goal is to get the latest breaking news on air no later than half an hour after it happens, so we can be the first choice for news,” said Badari Prasad, technical head of ABC TV. “Our technology has to support our journalists with speed and accuracy. From the very start, the Grass Valley equipment has done that. This latest upgrade gives us more flexibility, even more speed and, thanks to its use of industry standard technologies like Gigabit Ethernet, it meets our budget as well as our operational requirements.”
