TOKYO – NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) has revamped its international news channel NHK World TV last month to broadcast in English language and come up with round-the-clock news bulletins. The 24-hour broadcast will use the TV network's state-of-the-art news studio in its Tokyo headquarters. Referred to by NHK as a "complete re-branding", the major change is undertaken in line with the public broadcaster's goal of transforming NHK World TV into a global news channel in the high-definition TV broadcast environment. "NHK aims to establish an international reputation for NHK World as a reliable source of news and other information from Asia," said Yoshinori Imai, executive vice-president of NHK. "Last year-end saw the completion of a new ‘news studio’. This is entirely different from the former studio — the new one comes with an innovative power-saving design. It is equipped with LED lighting and liquid crystal monitor screens. Much emphasis will also be placed on producing a rich and flexible range of information programmes, both serious and entertaining." NHK World TV expects to hurdle the 100-million mark and serve 110 million households by end-March 2009 from the current 80 million households reached by satellite and cable-TV services transmission. Imai revealed: "Further, a Hi-Vision service will be inaugurated in December. NHK will be the world's first international broadcaster to provide news and information programmes in Hi-Vision." In addition to the news reports, an important part of the re-branding will focus on the Japanese and Asian cultures. The channel describes itself as "Your Eye on Asia". Imai said another distinctive feature of NHK’s international initiative is an online service. "Overseas viewers will have round-the-clock real-time access to almost all programmes of NHK World TV on the Internet. Domestic viewers can also access news bulletins via simultaneous streaming," he added. NHK World TV started broadcast in 1995 as a service for Japanese expatriates in other parts of the world. NHK also broadcasts an international TV channel in the Japanese language, and radio services in 18 languages.
