| Posted: February 2009 | ||||||
NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA – In an effort to improve its balance sheet figures, Thomson has expressed its intention to sell Grass Valley, which it acquired from Terry Gooding in 2002.This announcement came after the board of directors approved the proposal of Frederic Rose, COO of Thomson, to divest the company’s “non-strategic operations”. Thomson’s new strategic framework is to focus on services to content providers. In a statement on 28 January 2009, Rose said: “Today we announce the refocusing of our business on content creators, leveraging our technological expertise and our positioning with network operators. Strengthening our balance sheet is the precondition to implementing this strategic framework.” As of 31 December 2008, Thomson posted an unaudited net debt of 2.1 billion euros. On 7 January 2009, the Nevada City-based Grass Valley received the 2008 Technical & Engineering Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for contributions to cutting-edge TV technology. NATAS praised Grass Valley for its pioneering effort in the development and standardisation of file formats for video and audio. Grass Valley spearheaded the development of the General eXchange Format (GXF) that affords third-party equipment to exchange content files over IT networks as well as with IT media, with Grass Valley products.
