GlobeCast’s action enables Koreans to receive AXN HD
Posted: March 2009

Contender AsiaSEOUL –  Sony Pictures’ action TV channel AXN has started airing in HD in South Korea.

Sony Pictures Entertainment Networks – Asia (SPENA), Malaysia’s Measat Satellite Systems and France’s GlobeCast have come together to launch this HD programming, another interesting HD development in Asia.

Under an agreement signed, GlobeCast will pick up the AXN HD channel feed from SPENA’s facilities in Singapore. GlobeCast will then deliver the signal from its operations centre in Singapore via its RIBU fibre network to its Hong Kong teleport for uplinking to Measat-3’s platform and transmission to the Korean audience, initially via MPEG-4/DVB-S and, subsequently, will be moving to MPEG-4/DVB-S2.

GlobeCast, a France Telecom company, has already been delivering HD channels in partnership with Measat. Some of these channels include The History Channel HD and National Geographic Channel HD. The two companies have also collaborated in delivering SD channels.

The delivery of AXN in HD in the Korean market, which started last month, comes a few months after it was first launched in Spain late last year. AXN HD offers 24 hours of TV shows and movies focused on adventure, reality and lifestyle sports. Among its top-rating shows include CSI, Contender Asia and Numbers.

GlobeCast said its Singapore playout facility allows regional channels to launch a new feed or to expand regionally as well as to localise their channel.

“GlobeCast’s presence in Hong Kong and partnership with Measat in particular provides a premium content-delivery solution and wide reach to international HD channels seeking to launch their channel to Asian audiences,” according to a joint statement.

AXN is part of Sony Pictures Television International's diverse portfolio of over 40 global networks. Sony Pictures Tele-vision International is a Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) company.
