SINGAPORE – Six broadcasters from the South-east Asian region forged an alliance to cooperate along three areas — content, sales and marketing, and technology — and capitalise on the economies of scale and combined market that the region can offer. The six broadcasters, who are from member-countries of the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN), signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the island-state to form the Smart Alliance. The six founding members of the alliance are ABS-CBN of the Philippines, BBTV (Thailand), Vietnam’s International Media Corporation (IMC), Indonesia’sMedia Nusantara Citra (MNC), Media Prima (Malaysia) and MediaCorp (Singapore). The broadcasters agreed to create a steering committee headed by MediaCorp CEO Lucas Chow as the chairman. The other members of the committee are ABS-CBN CEO Eugenio L Lopez III, BBTV director Khun Veraphan, IMC CEO Tim Lam, Media Prima CEO Abdul Rahman Ahmad, MNC group CEO Hary Tanoesoe-dibjo and MediaCorp deputy CEO Chang Long Jong. As an alliance, the founding members hope to take advantage of their combined market size, which represent more than half a billion viewers. ASEAN is also home to a growing middle-class population with substantial spending powers. “The alliance is well positioned to exploit economies of scale both as a supplier of coveted content as well as a buyer of technology and equipment,” the broadcasters said in a statement. “For advertisers and clients, the alliance grouping will be able to deliver marketing and promotional solutions on a regional platform.” “As a community of regional media companies, we believe there is scope for an alliance that is established and driven purely by commercial considerations and goals. Our hope is that we will be the Alliance of Choice of all media companies in the Asia-Pacific within the next three years or so,” Chow said. “We are pleased to be part of this ASEAN alliance, which provides a better structure for the long-established commercial relations with virtually all the countries involved. We hope that with the alliance, we can further leverage and expand on these relationships for the mutual benefits of all parties,” said Abdul Rahman.
