By Jeanette Tan — Budding and experienced digital artists and animators alike enjoyed themselves at this year’s CG Overdrive, the annual four-day computer graphics (CG) event held in conjunction with BroadcastAsia2009.Themed CG-ficial intelligence, this year’s event zoomed in on specialisation and in-depth knowledge sharing, featuring highly specialised workshops conducted by the elites of the digital animation world. Known as “Professional Tracks”, participants attended two-day workshops on six different tracks: 2D; Story Development; Games; Visual Effects (VFX); Character Animation; and Business. Enthusiasts, students and veterans in the CG industry had the opportunity to delve directly into the specific field of their choice, and spend two full days acquiring knowledge and skills from the professionals. Among the star-studded speakers’ list was Victor Navone, a renowned 2-4D animator with Pixar. He spoke on character animation on Day 2 of the event. Conference participants also heard from veteran modeller and digital matte painter Jeremy Cook, concept development visionary and illustrator Craig Mullins, and Lee Stringer, CG supervisor from Lucasfilm Animation Singapore. “Alongside the growth of the industry in Singapore has come increased demand for specialisation and vertical knowledge sharing, and we have grown together with the industry to meet this demand,” said Sen Lai, conference chair for the event. This growth has been reinforced further by the presence of more design and CG schools at the event. Newly-opened FZD School of Design features a one-year diploma course in design, while the Academy of Art University and Raffles Design Institute, among others, are offering degree programmes in various artistic disciplines. With more CG schools and elite studios opening in Singapore, the republic looks set to surge forward in the international ranks of CG animation and visual effects — and an event like CG Overdrive is certainly a boon to the industry.
