SYDNEY – Sony presented the line-up of its broadcast and content creation solutions at the recently concluded SMPTE09, which saw a number of new technologies and products
that are set to make their debut in the rest of the region in the months ahead. From two custom-built outside broadcast (OB) vans to conceptual 3D technology, Sony showcased products and solutions for the broadcast industry and more from the largest display booth at this year’s SMPTE show. With the aim of providing Australian broadcast professionals with the opportunity to learn more about industry trends and how Sony’s solutions can meet varied needs, Sony hosted a series of workshops and seminars that included “3D technologies, from Glass to Glasses”, “Colour Management for Digital Cinematography” and “Demystifying the menus on a PDW-700 and PDW-F800”. Also, during the exhibition, in order to showcase how Sony can bring a creative vision to life, a demonstration was conducted showing how differing production needs can be addressed with integrated solutions. The outcome delivered improved workflow management, high production values and innovative ways to face the challenges of high-pressure production environments at all levels. However, one of the key highlights of the Sony exhibit was two custom-built OB vans, specifically designed by Sony’s Professional Solutions Division for Thoroughbred Racing Productions (TRP) to cover horse-racing meets in both metropolitan and regional areas around Victoria, Australia. The two vans demonstrated Sony’s creative approach in combining products into a custom solution to meet specific broadcast needs. All visitors to SMPTE09 were also invited to take part in the Sony-sponsored ACS Master Class Series where some of Australia’s most-recognised directors of photography (DoPs) conducted classes and workshops for industry professionals. Among the DoPs were John Seale (Cold Mountain, The English Patient, Rain Man, The Talented Mr. Ripley) and Roger Lanser (As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing).
