| AXN in joint venture with CU Media in S Korea |
| Posted: February 2011 | ||||||
SEOUL – In order to allow AXN’s current programming of Korean-subtitled English-language shows
to be further localised with the addition of Korean content, the TV channel recently entered into a joint venture with CU Media, a subsidiary of C&M Co, to manage and operate AXN in South Korea. The partnership will also witness a huge expansion of AXN’s distribution into cable. AXN entered the Korean market in July 2005 as a foreign transmission channel, providing top-notch US programming, including the popular CSI franchise and long-running series, Law & Order. AXN’s growth in South Korea has been marked by various milestones in the past five years, including the launch of the AXN channel in HD in Hong Kong, being the first international GE channel to secure carriage on all three IPTV platforms, and signing deals with multiple system operators, CJ Hellovision and On Media, to launch AXN on cable. Ricky Aw, senior vice-president and general manager of SPE Networks-Asia, said: “AXN is our flagship channel brand and has been the leading international channel in Asia for many years. Since its launch in South Korea, it has been very well received, as can be seen by the distribution growth achieved over a relatively short span of time. I am very excited about this joint venture because this gives us the opportunity to further localise AXN, as well as significantly expand our brand presence and viewership.”
