SINGAPORE – TV viewers in Singapore will soon be able to watch their favourite TV programmes on a multitude of devices
when local terrestrial broadcaster MediaCorp launches its over-the-top (OTT) interactive-TV service in the second half of this year. The OTT service will be delivered over broadband connection and made available on TV sets, PCs, tablet devices and mobile phones. Leveraging its bouquet of TV, radio, print and online offerings as well as third-party content, MediaCorp will provide the service for free, except for premium content, which requires a subscription. Lucas Chow, then CEO of MediaCorp, commented: “We want this service to be device-agnostic so that our interactive-TV experience goes beyond the TV set. We want users to enjoy this interactivity and stay engaged wherever they are, whether they are using a set-top box, a phone or a tablet. It will be an enriched experience like no other.” TV solutions provider Ericsson has been selected by MediaCorp to enable and manage the new OTT service. The contract is Ericsson’s first managed services deal with a media company in Asia and includes a broad range of Ericsson’s TV solutions that allow consumers to watch their video content at any time, anywhere and on a wide variety of devices. Fadi Pharaon, head of Ericsson in Singapore, revealed: “Ericsson will design, integrate and operate a customised solution for MediaCorp based on our portfolio of products, which will allow consumers to access content via specific set-top boxes, connected TV sets, tablets, PCs and mobile devices.”
