NEW DELHI – The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) is honouring David Wood, deputy director, Technology and Development of European Broadcasting Union
(EBU), with a Distinguished Service Award. The award, ABU says, is bestowed on Wood for his “outstanding contributions” to the development of broadcast technology system standards. In addition to his EBU position, Wood is chair of the ITU-R Working Party 6C, which has produced standards and recommendations for DTV and HDTV — including ITU Recommendation 601, which has become the basis for DTV standards worldwide. Wood also chairs the European High-Definition Forum. Among the other prominent contributions that Wood has made are in the areas of the EBU/AES digital audio interface, the DVB Digital TV Project, as well as his role in mentoring the International Academy of Broadcasting in Montreux, Switzerland. In addition, Wood is the author of more than 100 technical papers, articles and book chapters covering DTV, quality evaluation, broadcast strategies, digital radio and 3DTV. The ABU Distinguished Service Award, whose previous recipient was Kenji Nagai, executive director general of Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), is presented to Wood at the ABU Technical Committee meeting in New Delhi, India, on November 3. The ABU Technical Committee meeting, held from November 2-8, is in conjunction with the annual ABU General Assembly, which returns to the Indian capital for the first time since it was held in the city in 1990. India’s national broadcasting corporation, Prasar Bharati —which oversees India’s national broadcasters, Doordarshan and All India Radio — is hosting the meetings that are expecting more than 400 participants from 42 countries. Apart from the General Assembly on November 7 and 8, there are also a number of associated meetings held, including the ABU Technical Committee meeting, the Sports Group meeting, the Administrative Council meeting, and the ABU/FES Seminar for developing countries. Among the key topics for discussion are how broadcasters are gearing up for new TV and radio services, the lessons learnt from the coverage of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami this year, and the role of media in national development.
