LONDON – As the sporting world warms up for next year’s Summer Olympic Games in London
, Ericsson is gearing itself to bring the London 2012 Olympics to a global audience of almost five billion — after supplying the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) with solutions for the delivery of event coverage and other future sporting events to broadcasters around the world. The premium global sports content will be distributed to EBU members and other rightsholders across the globe over both satellite and fibre networks in MPEG-2 SD or MPEG-4 AVC 4:2:2 HD using nearly 1,000 Ericsson RX8200 professional receivers, part of the company’s contribution and distribution portfolio. The deal extends a long-established relationship between the EBU and Ericsson, which has provided the EBU with solutions for major sporting occasions including the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, cycling’s Tour De France, tennis’ Wimbledon, and European soccer. Paolo Pusteria, head of Procurement & Network Partnerships at EBU, said: “The EBU has over 60 years’ experience in delivering premium live content in a seamless, reliable and cost-effective way. We are delighted to extend our relationship with Ericsson for the 2012 Olympic Games, the biggest sporting event in the world, to allow us to provide our broadcast customers with the high-quality and flexible service they demand.” The EBU operates a global satellite and fibre network out of Geneva, Switzerland, covering all of Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region. Besides being one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar, London 2012 will also mark the first time the Olympic Games will be broadcast live in HD 3D. With 3D very much a feature in sports broadcasting today — as exemplified by the inaugural and successful 3D broadcasting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ericsson said the solutions it offers to the EBU will grant broadcasters the extra option of delivering the London 2012 Olympics in 3D. According to Ericsson, the RX8200 professional receivers can be software-upgraded to support Ericsson’s SimulSynch 3D solution for contribution applications — granting audiences worldwide with the best viewing experience possible.
