| Aussie telecoms entities to merge |
| Posted: February 2009 | ||||||
Vodafone Australia and Hutchison 3G Australia (H3GA) have agreed to merge in a 50-50 joint venture under the name VHA.
The country’s third- and fourth-largest telecommuniations companies, respectively, are expected to complete their merger by mid-year which will give both the opportunity to exact maximum results from the new entity, said H3GA’s parent company, Hutchison Telecommunications Australia, in a disclosure to the Australian Securities Exchange. In marketing its products and services under the Vodafone brand, VHA will keep the exclusive rights to use H3GA’s 3 brand, even after the transition period. “The operators’ customer bases are largely complementary — 3 has strength in post-paid and non-voice while Vodafone has strength in pre-paid,” said Nathan Burley, analyst for global advisory consultancy Ovum. Even with roughly six million customers and combined total revenues of A$4 billion (US$2.615 billion) for the 12 months ended last June 30, much more would be demanded from VHA if it must survive the competition.
