| IPTV services poised for growth in multidwelling-unit (MDU) market |
| Posted: March 2009 | ||||||
IPTV-service providers can expect to experience growth in the multidwelling-unit (MDU) markets, according to a report by research company In-Stat.Because of this positive outlook, IPTV expansion in MDUs is expected to serve as a differentiator for properties where the service is available. Service providers have shifted focus to MDUs because of the sagging market for single-family housing. At the regional level, In-Stat bets on the Asia-Pacific as offering the largest opportunity for subscriber growth in the MDU market. The report also predicted that IPTV services to high-density deployments, such as apartments, would exceed US$6 billion worldwide by 2013. “Deploying IPTV in the MDU market is a ‘no brainer’ for service providers,” In-Stat analyst Amy Cravens said. “Deploying IPTV in high-density environments offers significant cost savings, compared to single-family housing markets. “In this economy, service providers are looking to maximize the return for every infrastructure-investment dollar, and MDU deployments provide just that,” she explained. On the other hand, the hotel market is perceived as more difficult to penetrate in the short term. Allocating the budget for the deployment is harder because of the current economic slowdown. Plummeting revenues as a result of fewer bookings are discouraging network upgrades for IPTV support.
