| OmniBus makes iTX available for mobile TV |
| Posted: April 2009 | ||||||
OmniBus Systems recently announced that it is making its iTX solution available for mobile-TV applications. iTX is OmniBus’ IT-based solution for software automation, master control and playout system. iTX Mobile, the new solution, is designed to allow traditional broadcasters and content owners to launch new services for mobile TV with enhanced capabilities. The Denver-based company said that with iTX Mobile, broadcasters could save on cost usually associated with the expansion of services to other media, such as mobile TV. It is made possible by building in the encoding of the SD output directly to an MPEG-4 stream, which is used by telcos or third parties when delivering content to mobile phones or to remote locations. iTX Mobile also supports an MPEG-2 transport system over IP as an input that can be scheduled as a live event. OmmiBus said this capability saves on hardware cost as the need for a separate MPEG decoder is eliminated. Mike Oldham, OmniBus Systems’ CEO, said these features and capabilities allow broadcasters to proceed with their expansion plans despite “tough” market conditions, apparently referring to the global economic crisis. Instead of holding back on expansion plans, Oldham said broadcasters could take advantage of the crisis as entertainment consumption is believed to be higher during tough times. Aside from providing cost savings, iTX also offers broadcasters new revenue opportunities with the capability of inserting advertisements and by supporting different formats. “Format-independent and bit-rate-agnostic iTX Mobile allows broadcasters to mix media formats and resolutions in the same schedule. Compressed video files such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4/H.264, DV25/50 and Windows Media — as well as wrapped formats such as MXF and QuickTime — are all supported in their native form and decoded by iTX Mobile during transmission,” OmniBus said in a statement. Broadcast HD, SD and lower bit rates can also be mixed within a single schedule and are automatically up- or down-converted by iTX Mobile. Live sources can be scheduled, mixed and branded along with recorded content.
