At the recent inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games 2010 (YOG 2010)
, telco Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) said it had provided virtual data centre services to support mission-critical operations.As the official data centre infrastructure partner of YOG 2010, SingTel supplied secure virtual data centre services through the offering of its business unit, Alatum. This included environmental management and the physical staging facilities to drive key applications such as games and results management, Internet applications and Web hosting. To ensure all systems ran smoothly during the event, SingTel provided disaster recovery and business continuity services, including network and infrastructure. Bill Chang, SingTel’s executive vice-president of Business Group, said: “SingTel’s virtual data centre services allowed the Games organisers to avoid heavy upfront investments in ICT infrastructure and maintenance costs, while improving productivity and streamlining business operations.” As the Games’ official multimedia services provider, SingTel provided fixed and mobile telecommunications services, high-speed Internet access and leased lines services to support voice and data communications at all 35 competition and non-competition venues. In addition, SingTel supplied the software for innovative website and mobile applications, including social network applications and a multi-language online chat platform. A cutting-edge mobile device, Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010 was also developed by SingTel to help athletes and officials keep abreast of the latest results, while providing them with interesting information on Singapore while on the move. SingTel also provided webcasts of YOG 2010 to a global audience, in collaboration with the Olympic Broadcast Services.
